ABOUT THE FILM

You’ve seen the coauthors of the fascinating “Beloit College Mindset List” everywhere, from WGN Radio in Chicago to The Today Show in New York City. Now, “The Mindset Movie” documentary asks Tom McBride and Ron Nief about the List’s inception, it’s popular present (with over a million hits a year), and its potential future in fifty years or so (“All I know is that I won’t be doing it then,” Ron exclaims toward the end of the film). The movie also looks at college freshmen from the 1860s to the 1960s, then wonders what they may be like in the 2060s. I’ve often imagined a scene of three “frosh” –one from the 1860s, one from the 1960s, and one from the 2060s– congregating at an old school “smoking room,” and discussing such universal topics as friendship, faith and love. I’m quite sure that the trio (along with not understanding many of the other cultural issues at hand), might well be inhaling substances of a very different nature.

My name is Bryan Oldenburg, a 1986 graduate of Beloit College, and a former student of the brilliant Tom McBride (a professor who was a student favorite, ever since he walked onto the stage of academia).
